Laguna di Venezia
The shallow waters of the Venetian lagoon host in parts of the lagoon a series of observation stations of varying size. The stations consist of a circular ring which is placed on stilts about 3 metres above the level of high tide and can be reached only by small boats or via motorised hanging gliders. The rings of most stations measure only about 50 sqm of size. Larger ones have the same form, but a different diameter and can host more functions. Some of the stations are connected by a long rectilinear platform. This structure is placed at a height of about a metre above the level of high tide. It connects a series of islands, crosses over the water and through thick patches of reed, mostly Arunda Donix and Thypha Angustifolia.

The platform serves as a landing strip for motorised hanging gliders or small boats and at the same time as some sort of large footbridge, which allows ornithologists and environmental researchers, which study the lagoon environment in this area, to visit different parts of the humid territory of the lagoon, without impacting it physically. From here they study the high number of fish species, unusual for a stretch of water with a sandy bottom, the complexity of the lagoon is formed by river mouths, shallow waters, sandbanks, islands, artificial canals and inlets, the different water plants present on site, but most importantly the huge variety of domestic and transitory species of waterbirds present in the lagoon. As a matter of fact, there are very few places, where this can be done better, since the Venetian lagoon is not only one of the most important habitats for water birds in the world, but also a place which is visited twice a year by about 50 percent of all European migratory birds. Birds which pass through this large, but at the same time relatively small area of the lagoon, while on their way, from their summer domicile in Northern Europe to their winter domicile in Africa and vice versa.
