Bäume und Häuser
Halle
The exhibition Bäume und Häuser puts on display works by the students Mattia Barilani, Marco Belloni, Graziano Camelia, Greta Ceribelli, Pietro Dardano, Giorgia Notaro, Fabio Valcamonico through a series of maquette, drawings and sound as well as the works of 30 more students through a video installation. The exhibition is divided in 3 parts: the presentation and the series “Rifugio new bosco / Refuge in the woods”, the series “Pensare in negativo / Think the opposite” and the series “Cocktailbar in un frutteto / Cocktailbar in an orchard”. Each part is dedicated to a different work series and presented in one of the spaces of the gallery: the first large gallery room, the second gallery room as well as in one of the two interstitial spaces.
The exhibition starts in the first gallery room with a small presentation of the whole exhibition and the project series “Rifugio new bosco / refuge in the woods”. The different works of this section are presented through their drawings, which are placed perpendicular to the main facade with its large glass windows. The drawings are arranged in three sequences suspended in the air inside a structure made from yellow cord, thin round aluminum bars and red clamps of two different sizes. The drawings are placed in such a way as to transform this large space into a different species of space, more familiar to the space of a forest, defined by the sequence of one vertical element after another and a changing density. This sensation is further emphasized by the presence of large trees in front of the gallery, which follow a similar spatial regime and are visible through the large windows of the main facade. During the day the light shines through these windows and projects the shadows of the trees standing outside the building inside the space of the first gallery room and onto the drawings. Now the trees present on the drawings and the trees outside relate for the moment of a shadow. When walking through the space of the gallery each drawing takes precedence, when standing in front of it, no other drawing is visible, just like in a forest, where one tree hides the other tree behind it. A small banner attached to the lower end of the drawing gives only the name of the author and the scale of the drawings away. The whole project series is presented through short texts, written with green letters on the white perimetrical walls of the room.
The interstitial space between the first and second main space resembles some sort of cave, there is no natural light present and inside the darkness a video is projected, that presents the works of the work series “Pensare in negativo / Think the opposite” through a sequence of black and white photos. One photo after another a different work is projected either through one or several stills. The different luminosity of the shoots, some of them resembling a situation during the day, some of them during the night, illuminate the space of the projection and a very peculiar ambiance is created, where the different intensities of the light reflected from the projection back into the space transforms the space itself.
In the second main hall there are presented 8 works of the project series “Cocktailbar in un frutteto / Cocktailbar in an orchard” through their maquette as well as their corresponding drawings. The maquettes are placed on their transport boxes, made out of pinewood plywood, while each drawing is placed on a table like structure. Maquette and drawings are complemented by small paper loudspeakers, which at a very low volume, audible only, when holding the box near to someone’s ear, play the corresponding playlist of the Cocktail bar designed in the project. The different projects are displayed on horizontal linear sequences, which are places randomly inside the space between the 4 columns of the second hall, echoing and transforming the spatial quality of the first hall.
